Phil grew up on a ranch in the Little Belt Mountains in Montana: the great Western artist Charlie Russell had spent time on his grandfather’s ranch nearby.  In a one room school house with his two sisters and a neighbor, his teacher passed her passion for drawing on to him.  One of her quotes still rings true: “If you want to learn how to draw a tree, go sit on a rock and draw a tree.
